Understanding the Different Parts of Braces
These are typically small, square metal or ceramic objects. They are attached to the teeth with special orthodontic bonds, and they are a very important part of the process. They ensure that each tooth is affected by the overall procedure. Brackets will normally remain on the teeth for the duration of your treatment.
This is a smooth metal wire that runs along the width of the mouth and connects to each bracket. It helps to reposition teeth over time. As the treatment progresses, the orthodontist may chance the wire to a heavier one that can cause more drastic changes.
These are small rings of elastic that help to keep the wire fixed on the brackets. They are replaced each time a patient gets an adjustment. Ligatures may be clear, silver, or colored, and many patients change colors regularly to match sports teams, holidays, or seasonal colors.
Also called elastics, these attach to hooks on the upper and lower teeth, and they are normally worn along the sides of the mouth. They are typically removed for meals and other purposes, but they still need to be worn most of the time. A rubber band helps to adjust the overall position of the jaw and correct a patient’s bite.
These are different from the normal rubber bands. They are a ring of metal or ceramic that goes all the way around the molars in the back of the mouth. These apply a little extra pressure all around the molar to help ensure these important teeth are adjusted properly.
Coil springs are used in orthodontics to reduce crowding of teeth. They are a tiny structure that is placed between two teeth along the wire. It puts pressure on the two teeth to make them move away from each other and increase overall space.
As you can see, these are a very complicated piece of orthodontic technology. If you are interested in learning more about how braces work, Ghosh Orthodontics can help.
